Deep Purple – Celebrating 50 Years of Smoke on the Water with YES
Kicking off this August in Hollywood, Florida, and concluding a mere 19 stops later in September in Scranton, Pennsylvania, but not before one epic night at Jones Beach Theater on September 1st 2024, in Wantagh, New York. Deep Purple then return to Europe for an 11 stop tour of their biggest cities with Jefferson Starship in October, before a final hurrah with Reef in good ol’ Blighty for 5 epic nights in November.
Deep Purple recently released a super deluxe edition of its album, Machine Head, which includes the classics “Smoke on the Water,” “Highway Star” and “Space Truckin’.” Originally released back in 1972, remixed and remastered in 1997, then again in 2012 for a 40th Edition special, which included the 97 mixes. And now, the brand-new, super deluxe reissue of the iconic album, and one more opportunity to hear it live, right here at Northwell Health at Jones Beach Theater.
The classic, and highly influential song, “Smoke on the Water” is on Rolling Stone’s “500 Greatest Songs of All Time” list from 2004 at number 434, it placed at number 12 on Q magazine’s list of Top 100 Guitar Songs in March 2005, while the riff in the track is ranked number 4 on Total Guitar magazine’s, Greatest Guitar Riffs Ever list. In 2017, the song was added to the Grammy Hall of Fame. This year, the band released its first official music video, remixed by Dweezil Zappa, with animation directed by Dan Gibling and Luke McDonnell of Chiba Film. You can see it for yourself down below.
Meanwhile, Yes, deliver a 50+ year career-spanning set made up from their massive back catalog of hits plus material from their latest album, Mirror to the Sky, from 2023. In the United States, it peaked at number 22 on the Billboard 200 and internationally, it reached a respectable 30 on the UK Albums and number 4 on the UK Rock & Metal Albums charts. But you can expect a massive variety in some of the world’s best Progressive Rock tracks ever, like “Roundabout” and “Owner of a Lonely Heart.”
